Recess Before Lunch
Lunchtray.jpgWest Friendship ES follows the philosophy of "Recess Before Lunch."   Several Howard County schools participate in this type of initiative, and more join in each year.

Before eating lunch, our students are dismissed to the playground for play and then are brought in to eat. Following lunch, students will return to class, ready to learn. Students will have 30-minutes for recess and 30-minutes in the lunchroom for eating.

Why do it?  There are many benefits to this type of program.  Schools that have implemented the initiative report that it has:

*Improved student behavior on the playground, in the cafeteria, and in the classroom.

*Students waste less food and drink more milk. This leads to increased nutrient intake.

*It improved the cafeteria atmosphere and there was a significant decrease in cafeteria
      behavior issues.

*Children are more settled and ready to learn upon returning to the classroom.

We know this program will promote better nutrition and student achievement for all of our students. If you have any questions, please contact the administration.  If you would like to read more about the RBL initiative, you can check out the great links listed below.
